Lina Shkilko Essay 2 Technology

Imagine, you are on the subway platform. You see rats on the rails. You are hearing loud thunder of metal wheels. Trains, with different color circles and letters, are going to unknown you destination. You can't ask nobody, because you are alone on this station. Scared human being, your skin are covered by goosebumps, and... Eureka! I put my hand on a pocket of jeans and squeeze my smart phone. Technology! Thank God! We have technology in nowadays. I took my iphone and smiled. Small brown application “subway map” was looking at me through the smart phones screen and helped me found shortest way to my home.
We use technology every day , everywhere. I feel sympathy to ancient people, when I think haw they lived. No planes, no internet and smart phones. Theirs ability and resources were so limited. Only carriage with horses and pigeons or postman, who delivered letters. Our ancestors needed ages for sending letters or communicate by distance. In 13th century famous Moroccan traveler Marco Polo spent 15 years, from 1276 to 1291, to reach Indonesia from Asia across Persia and China. But now it doable in several hours by plane.
It seems easy to check a weather forecast in the morning and reply to emails the same time. You can calculate your road time to your destination on “Hop Stop” application and see your best friend in the Skype, in spite of the fact that she or he lives of another site of the globe. It is a typical morning for average human being, in nowadays.
I came to the U.S. 14 month ago, I am a new immigrant who lives in NYC, and I can say ,”I am real New Yorker”, and I can say.”I can't imagine my life without technologies”.
The most useful gadget for me is Iphone. I think all smart phones make our life more comfortable , interesting, safer, and more organized. I can't underline more important application or service, but I fully aware how I addictive from all application in my phone. This smart device is real helper in different sites of my life.
Sometime I realize how strongly I miss some people, who very dear to me, but between us a big distance. And how these amazing technologies, give us a possibility to communicate with each other and feel pleasant emotions. I am also happy that we have a Skype and Viber.
Now almost all people addictive, in good meaning of this word from internet and smart phones. I think it is very positive tendency, which improving our life and give us more possibilities for our health, work, emotions and communication.

                       Benefit My Education with Technology

Today, technology almost covers everything. So technology is changing us in many ways like life, work, education and entertainment, etc. For me, technology has been benefiting my education.

Firstly, I can study English more conveniently with technology. English is my second language. Inspire I have ESL class, I need more practices out of class. So I download some English videos like We Are New York, and audio like VOA English in my mobile phone. I can practice any time beside class. It's very convenient for me to improve my English. Secondly, my classmates and I can share our English writing on the blog. How to improve English writing? Unlike the traditional way that only teachers correct our writings, our teacher suggests us to post our writings on the public blog to let' s study each other. Compare with other classmates' writing, I can learn more in new words, new phases, how to make good sentences, how to build up the structure of an essay, even though their mistakes. I think that learning from others is better than learning only by yourself. It is a good way to make me get more writing skills.

Thirdly, Internet is a good teacher of my son and I. My son is 26 months. He stars to ask questions about this world. At the first time, he just asked the simple questions, such as why did I need to wear clothes? Can I play but not sleep and so on. I didn't keep them on my mind until he asked me one question one time, which was why Aunt Li shown up in the computer and said hello to me. In fact, it was an Internet long-distance video. I felt funny at the beginning, but at the second second, I realized it meant my son was growing up, and his curiosity was a good key to open the smart door. But I am imposable to answer all his questions. What's more, I couldn't use the technological words to explain despite I know the answer. I should try to tell him so easily that he could understand. So I need help from the Internet. From the Internet, I got some similar questions and answers. I pick up one simple answer to tell him, which was because both Aunt Li and we had computers. After that, if my son asks questions that I am not sure the answer, I will tell my son to give me one moment, and I need to ask Teacher Computer. Now, my son has known who Teacher Computer is, and he likes this teacher, too.
Thanks technology, it is changing my life now. I am sure I will get more benefit from the future's technology.

Tonight, I don’t sleep at all. We have to make ours family decision. We really hesitate what we have to do. A lot of our neighbors and acquaintance already died. Yesterday, when I came at work, the school shut its doors. All parents don’t let theirs children leave home. Danger and fear flies everywhere. My husband, consider that stay at home safer, but I prefer to move to my brother’s house in the Maryland.
I am looking out the window… It’s terrible, more crates than yesterday, scavengers clean our street, but it still fetid terrific smell and tossed animals are across. The blazing unrelenting sun has reappear under our miserable and unlucky Philadelphia.

How Terrible Influenza was!

I would like to explain how terrible and also weird influenza was. It was a pretty cold day in a winter five years ago. When I woke up in the morning, I felt that I had a sore throat. This is the most obvious symptom in the beginning when I have a cold. But I did not care, because I always had a sore throat very easily. I thought I just had a cold as usual.

When I arrived at my shoe store, I realized I was trembling. I felt that trembling was like my shadow. It always follows me. Sometimes my teeth were shivering. It took ten minutes to just take off my coat! I really did not want to do that. I felt like I wore only a swimsuit. I was sure my cold was not just a cold.

After my tiny lunch, I went to see a doctor. The doctor asked me to take my temperature first. I had a temperature of almost 104 degrees! As soon as I told my fever to the doctor, he gave the flu test to me. A few minutes later, the doctor told me that I had influenza. He looked very surprised, because this test usually takes more than ten minutes to get a result. There was another reason why he told me that my case was unusual. Because, I visited a medical clinic for flu shot one month ago. He said, “I cannot believe your case. Your result of flu test shows me very quickly and clearly, even though you already had a Flu shot.” I could not respond to his conversation anymore, because I felt exhausted. I started to get sweat with trembling. I really hated this combination!

The doctor gave me special medicine, and I was told to take enough rest, even after my fever went down. On the way to go home, I felt a weakness. I hardly walked straightly. When I got home and was washing my hands, I was very surprised. My face looked pale and horrible.

After I had medicines, all of a sudden, my fever went down. It was like a magic. I felt much better. I was pulling through and recovering from my sickness. I could start to enjoy tasting little by little. It took one week to recover from influenza completely. I decided not to take flu shot anymore!

                                                       Lesson from having a flu
When I was in middle school, I came down with a flu. In the beginning of it, I thought it was just a common cold, but I was wrong about it. Therefore I learned I should take minor illnesses more seriously.

I remember that was about spring. It started with a bad cold. I got a cough and had a stuffy nose. I couldn’t smell very well during that time. It felt like there were two fingers kept pinching my nose. Also I got a sore throat. My throat was very itchy and aching. Sometimes I coughed up with some sputum. I coughed and coughed a lot more that I realized the condition of my cough has become serious increasingly. Then I took some cough syrup and cold pills to help it. However, they weren’t strong enough and also it was too late to be controlled. Indeed, the second day a flu coming down menacingly. I had bouts of cough; I wasn’t able to stop it. My cough was persistent and uncontrollable. I was like a doll on full clockwork that would never stop. When I coughing, my whole body vibrating with it. It felt like my lungs would have jumped out of my throat. I could feel a powerful hand was trying to push and push harder from inside of my body. I was so tired, and the pain of my throat made me could badly speak.

As a result of those symptoms I couldn’t sleep well. I wake up often in the middle of night. The headache also bothered me from time to time. My head was pounding. It looked like there was a tight rope in my head; every time it tightened that caused every single of my nerves stabbed. That really made me feel awful, but that wasn’t all. Almost at the same time I developed a fever. My temperature was shot up to 39 Celsius quickly. My families had to take care of me in turn. My forehead was too hot and I needed to have a cold towel put on it in order to control the temperature. I was a small bun being in a big steamer waiting to be completely cooked. Having a fever was totally a disaster.  One second I was still in furnace sweating a lot, and then next I could feel like being in an icehouse. I could even hear my teeth were fighting to each other. I felt freezing and I curled up like a cabbage. My quilt was so damp because I sweated a lot. If I could smell, it must be the odor of a wet vest after people wear it for exercise in summer. I kept kicking my sheet off and tucking it up. My action definitely couldn't make my situation get better.

Sooner, I got some medicines, some Chinese traditional herbs which were not tasted good at all. It was really bitter and also smelled bad. My mother had to force me drink all of them. Fortunately, it worked. My temperature was getting lower slowly.  Although I got a little better appetite, I didn’t eat much. I still felt exhausted all the time, that made me feel I was a deflated balloon. My body was feeble, it seemed like every ounce of my strength has been taken away. When I could get up, I looked the reflection in the mirror. At the first glance, I was kind of couldn’t recognize myself. The face I saw was totally pale and weak. It looked like a dying flower without any of colours.

Few days after took those medicines and pills, I stared feeling better. I coughed less, and actually could sleep better. My energy level was getting higher than earlier.  My mother made some broth and some rice gruel. For body’s good hydration, I drank a lot of water every day. I was on the mend gradually. It’s really felt like the heavy burden on my back had been taken little by little. Then, my whole body suddenly got lighter.

When I finally recovered, I was really grateful I could have fresh air to breathe. I appreciated that I could eventually go out instead of stay at home in my bed all day. To have a refreshing expiration was great! I felt I had reborn again. I know better that we shouldn’t underrate any minor illnesses, because even they were not that deadly, they could also result some serious health problems. I hope I will be more careful about it and never get it again.

Serious Pimple

Pimple is a illness that some red rash raise on your skin, especially on your face. About ten years ago, I got a serious pimple. It began with eating lots of hot food and drinking white wine in a short time. And I had a work pressure. So my sleeping was not good. Then the pimple started on my face.

At the first time, there were several red spots on my face. And I squeezed them and make more effecting, and then the red spots turned into pimple. But I didn’t care at that time. Many people told me that it was normal because young people often had pimple. The only way I cured it was to keep Squeezing. And this made it worst.

At the same time, I found I couldn’t sleep very well, woke up early and couldn’t sleep any more. And I started to have constipation. The worst thing was there were more than 40% of my face was cover with pimple. I realized it was a serious pimple. My face is ugly. It was awful! I needed to saw a doctor.

After my doctor listened to what I talked about my illness. He checked my pimple very carefully. After that, he requested me to stopped squeezing the pimple, eating hot food, and drinking alcohols but drank more water. I also needed to relax myself from my work and try to sleep more. He gave me some Chinese medicine to add water to boil, and then drank. The last thing was I had to be patient because maybe I would spend a year to cure it.

I did everything across to what the doctor told me. I drank the Chinese medicine after boiling. It was extremely bitter. I started eating the mild food but not the hot food and no more alcohols, and tried to drink more water. At the same time, I listened to some light music and read books before sleeping. It made me sleeping well.

After a week, I felt the constipation wasn’t serious. I knew what the doctor told me worked. So I insisted the good job. About two months later, the pimple turned smaller. At the fourth month, the pimple was disappearing.

It took me about ten months to fully recover. My face was not ugly any more. I really appreciated my doctor. He not only cured my illness, but also gave me a good habit of eating more mild food but not hot food, drinking more water but not alcohols, and sleeping earlier. After keeping the good habit, I never have serious pimple.

A Terrible Flu Infection
In December, three years ago, I got the worst Flu I ever had in my life. It started with a cold, but unfortunately, it got worse and worse. It reminded me why the flu can be fatal for some people if it is not treated on time. I will never forget this terrible experience.
The worst part of this illness was the pain I felt in my chest when I coughed. I felt like my chest would exploit or like if someone was pressing and hitting my longs so hard. Suddenly, my temperature increased. Once, it started elevating, I started shivering and sweating that it almost made me hallucinate. It was a rare feeling I ever had because I had a high fever and at the same time I felt my body so cold.
My throat was congested, so I had a sore throat and threw phlegm. I couldn't speak or even swallow any kind of food or drink. That was awful. Food was tasteless. When I tried to taste the food, it tasted like plastic. All of these symptoms made me lost my appetite and made me felt fatigued, tired, and exhausted.
Although I had no energy and wanted stay on bed, I couldn't sleep very well because I had an unbearable headache. My head was painful that it caused me felt nauseous. I threw up what I had eaten and the skin of my body became yellow like if I had made up myself in a Halloween costume. I looked so pale and I couldn’t do anything. I was helpless for myself.
After I went to the hospital, my doctor found what type of flu was it and gave me antibiotics. He said that I had become dehydrated, so he recommended me to drink fluids as much as I could. These antibiotics started working so quickly that at the next day I was able to speak and drink some tea. Rest, stay warm, and drink hot drinks were essential for my recovering. My cousin, who was a great cook, had been making me some chicken soup, so I slowly recovered my appetite and food became to taste again.  I felt much better when coughing and headache went away from me because those symptoms were killing me.
Finally, I overcame this infection and  since that happened, I have been taking the flu shot every year even though each year could come out different flu virus. At least, I've prevented not to catch it again.  My full recovery took a process because I lost weight and my level of energy was too low. Now when I feel any kind of those symptoms I immediately drink some pills and visit my doctor right away. This disease can be dangerous if it’s not treated on time. Hopefully, I won’t catch it again.

 Influenza

In a few years ago, summer, I caught an influenza. I will never forget that experience; that summer was deadly hot, but I felt that I was living in a secret area which weather changed in every hour. For example, this moment I would feel like I was lost in an African desert, but in next hour, I would feel like I was wearing birthday suit in the North Pole.

In the beginning of the illness, I didn't feel so sick, because it started out as just a cold, and in my past opinion of a cold, I had thought I will be on the mend sooner or later, and in the meanwhile, I just need to drink more water. But I was totally wrong about it, because it suddenly got worse in the flowing few days. One day, when I woke up in the morning, I felt that my throat was as big as a walnut stuck in it, and I coughed so hard as if I coughed hard enough, then I will be able to spit the "walnut" out of my throat, but it was like wouldn't go away like forever.

All of this made me felt so headache and exhausted. I had felt there were thousand pound of stone suck in my head, and with each coughing come with a heavier stone bumped on my head. Also the "walnut" was getting bigger and bigger, so I was barely able to swallow any food. My body got weaker and weaker. In a few days, I lost a lot of weight. I felt myself was powerless as a last leaf of a tree.

I had been lying on the bed all of those times, and my father had to bring me around. He bought some flu medicine from drugstore, but they were not helpful to me. My body was come down with an unstable fever. My body temperature was being sweltering high in the second then suddenly trembling cold in the next. I was under covering in a heavy quilt in summer New York and without using air conditioner at that time.

Luckily, my father had taken me to call on a really professional and experienced doctor. He gave me a series of traditional Chinese medicine treatment, and then told me that I have to eat something because body needs nutrition to strengthen its system, and he told me to rest as well as possible.

When we went back home, he cooked the Chinese medicine, then I drank it. I went back to my bed and covered myself under my heavy quilt then totally fell in a deep deep sleep. When I woke up, my father told me I had almost slept for 30 hours, and in a moment, he had thought did I black out or just fall in sleep. But I was totally felt much well after that deep sleep. I started to feel hungry, and he had already prepared soup for me.

I was soon on the mend and back on my feet. I was so glad I had my father to take care of me at that time.

I woke up enough early from the sweltering. This years summer very hot, almost every day very humid with unrelenting sun and heavy air.
Today is saturday, my day off, but usually, I have to check my learners homework. I have a bunch of notebooks from school. I have spent couple hours for that as usual on saturday. Than I went to the market, I bought some cheese and meat, and tried to come back as quickly as it was possible, because everywhere around the market was terrible smell of spoiled coffee, rotten meat and something else, absolutely unpleasant and repulsive.
During way home, I met Martha Washington, she told me something about “French problem”, and ask my opinion. But I don't like politics at all and don't understand something in this area. We weren't talking too much, because it was very humid and too much sunny. I came back home and have a little nap.

Depression

Could you ever imaging that a mental illness can find a physical reflection?
In my essay, I would like to share an experience that I got from my life. I believe that I’m not the only person who could have this kind of trouble. My purpose is to focus more people’s attention on this issue and try to show easier ways to recover from it.
Eight years ago I was almost at the death’s door. The reason was the result of an unlucky love story, which started incredibly beautiful - with hope on new life and refreshment, and finished with the disappointments and the deep depression for me.
After I broke up with my boyfriend I continued thinking about this sick relationship over and over again. It was like a merry go around. I couldn’t take my mind off this subject. It was like a delusion. Every day I awoke with a morning headache and in a spoiled mood. Later, the headache became stronger and my mood became more gloomy. With time, the pain increased more. Sometime, I felt that my head was going to blow up. I started to have insomnia – I couldn’t sleep and went around my home like zombie. The only thing that I could do very well was crying, crying very much and without an obvious reason. My face was swollen and red with a big white spots. I looked really disgusting. At the same time I become very sensitive to everything.
Exactly at this moment, how I understood later, I started to have stomach problems. I lost appetite and felt nauseous most of the time. I started to suffer from abdominal pain. During this period of time I was really scared; scared, because I couldn’t control my body anymore.
Luckily, I had a good friend around me during this time. She took me to a psychologist for a consultation. This doctor gave me some antidepressant drugs and some hope. Hope, that together we can survive and I will get back to my happy life again. I became a permanent visitor of a group psychology activity, which I found very helpful. Also he recommended to do some relaxation and breathing excesses. I joined a yoga class later.
It took me a long time to fully recover even though I started feeling better. Now I try to be around positive people and children. I’m so glad that I can control my emotions now and don’t have any physical pain. I’m a happy person again. I got my healthy life back!

Do you know what is strep throat?

Essay # 1 Draft # 1

Nataliya Stefanyshyn

When I was a teenager, I got strep throat (angina). This is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are oval mussels at the back of the throat, caused by bacterial infection .People can get this illness in any season of the year. I remember when I had strep throat, I had symptoms, such as sore throat and high fever. It was bad experience in my life because things got much worse later.

The worst part of my illness was when my tonsils became red and swollen. I felt terrible throat pains, headaches, and pains in my ears and neck. Then, my tonsils became covered by white pus-filled spots. It made me feel very tired, lazy and weak, which made me sleep all day.

Also, the next week, when my mom checked my temperature, she noticed that my fever was going away and coming back in the next hours, which made me feel really cold and tremble. My fever would get higher throughout the nights and I barely got any sleep.

Also, my strep throat made me feel terrible pain. My mom made me lots of cups of warm tea and bowls of chicken soup, but it was hard for me to drink and eat any sort of food. Swollen glands in the neck changed my voice and it was difficult for me to talk. I felt like something was stuck in my throat and in addition to that I also had bad breath.

When the doctor came over, she told me that I was ill with a strep throat, which in my case was caused by a bacterium belonging to the group A streptococcus. To reduce my discomfort, the doctor recommended me to take antibiotics, which are pain relief and fever reducing medications at least once a day. Also my doctor told me I can get my voice back by gargling my mouth with warm salt water and drinks more fluid drinks.

It took me another week to fully recover from this illness. I was excited to return to my school, and see everyone, because I have stayed home for three weeks and missed lots of schoolwork and tests.

A BAD EXPERIENCE WHEN I BROKE MY ARM

A Bad Experience When I Broke My Arm

I still remember the day when I experienced a fall that caused my broken arm. It was a summer time, really hot and good to go to the beach. I was an 8 years old kid who likes to play everywhere without know that accidents could happen. On that day I went to school it was like any other day, that day after school I waited for my cousin who was in a different classroom. Both of us were in the same grade. We were the same age and seemed like twins. That was that everybody said in the town by that time.
On our way to our home after school my cousin and I stopped to play in a wrong place. This was a place where the water runs all around the town is kind of a small river. By that time this small river was dry and empty, so my cousin and I jump into there to hang on a tube of steel that crossed the little river.
We were having fun while we were playing on the tube, but I didn’t know that something terrible was about to happen to me when I fell from the tube to the dry river. My surprise after I fell was that I couldn’t get up by myself, I was feeling a lot of pain and I just couldn’t move my arm and I started to cry. My cousin was telling me repetitive times to get up but I can’t, we didn’t know what to do. This illness was resulted by a cough. It often felt like there was a shaking body, and I couldn’t do anything by myself. I felt like people who were going to fall down. I also felt like a flower that’s shacked by a big wind. I coughed and coughed almost each minute. Sometimes, I couldn’t speak clearly. My voice was like something that I couldn’t use to talk to anybody at home.
Besides of that, this coughing made me fatigued. Because of this flu, I became like someone who didn’t have eyes. I felt dizzy. Everything seemed dark. I couldn’t stand by myself even for a minute. I noticed that everything was turning with me. I felt like my head was going to move out from my body.
The last thing I had, this flu gave me a chronic fever. I felt my body was very hot. Sometimes, I felt someone who was freezing and another time, I felt like burning. So, I couldn’t keep my body’s temperature stable. I had no appetite and the only drink I could drink was nothing than water.
After that, I went to the Hospital and my Doctor listened me very carefully and told me that was a terrible Flu. He gave me some antibiotics and I took all the Doctor has given to me. Few days later, I felt fairly ok. I was coming to the Doctor and he told me that I could come back to work next week because everything was fine.
That took me a longtime to strongly recover even though I was feeling better with the antibiotic prescriptions. I felt a little bit of fatigue for at least two weeks.  Finally, I was recovered, but I take the opportunity to tell everybody that flu it’s a terrible illness to avoid because it can die many people in a little bit of time. A Simple Cold is not a Big Deal!
Last month it was snowing heavily and I got a cold. As every cold, at first I felt a little tired and had a mild sore throat. I have always been a healthy person so I have never been worried for a cold. Actually, I do not understand how a cold can scare some people.
The mild sore throat, however, made me feel for moments as if a tennis ball were stuck in my throat. Soon, I started with a bit of cough. I was only a day coughing a lot. After that, the congestion in my lungs was decreasing, but it joined with a slight headache. This mixture just made it slightly annoying.
Fever came soon, but , as people say, my body’s temperature was never as hot as a volcano. When my body was getting hotter I felt a little cold, but not like if I were in a refrigerator without any coat. It made my appetite lost a bit its usual place in my mind.
My body was lacking some strength by the fatigue. However, the smallest activity couldn't abduct all of my energies. My routine was affected merely a day that I had to stay in bed . The mild ache in my muscles never meant a big bother.
I did not have to go to the doctor because it was like a normal cold! I did what whatever doctor could tell me to do. I rest and drank fluids; and, over all, I did not have to take any medicine. When the fever disappeared I was recovering my usual strength. The couch remained three more days but eventually disappeared as well. As soon as those symptoms were leaving my body I couldn't even remember if I was really sick .

Terrible Flu

Last month, I came down with in bad flu. It was the worst one that I have had during all my life .I cannot forget this terrible experience since I had very hard symptoms..

Fever was the worst part of my worst experience .I had it for around four days; a medication that I took did not help me so much because it reduced my temperature for one to two hours only, so I should tolerate it until next dosage. I put cold tissues on my forehead to help me feel better, but it did not.

That fever came to me with her best friend .It was intolerable head ach which threw me in my bed without any energy. I felt like my head as heavy as a rock, and felt it dizzy like I was swinging in the playground. If you saw me at this time you can easily recognize a dark circles around my eyes which disappeared slowly after one week.

Both those symptoms gave me a bad feeling of exhaustion .I could not walk more than one meter, and I got a severe pain in my muscles .lost my appetite made my situation too bad since my body had a very poor nutritious fuels. Even though my doctor recommended lots of fluids, I could not take lots of it since I had a vomit too.

I rested around four days, after that I started to feel better, but it was not fully recover. My fever was gone first then my headache started to go slowly, but it took me few more days to gain my energy again .I hope that nobody experiences that bad flu. Right now I am totally healthy and I feel on top of the world.

An Unbearable Rash
When I was seven years old, and my immunity system was too young, I broke out in a rash. I contracted Chicken Pox. This is a kind of disease that affects most commonly children, and sometimes adults also.
It was a nightmare while I was awake. Everything started with a little itchy, but soon I felt like I was into a honeycomb, and its bees came to leave their stings on my body. That felt awful because when I tried to scratch my skin, there were volcanoes ready to erupt, and bring me a painful moment.
My mom came one day, and gave me a sponge to scratch those bubbles. With that I relieved my desire to scratch me. After few days my body was completely covered with red and yellow bubbles. Once I saw my body through a mirror, and believe me that looked like a strawberry.
Then a fight between fire and cold took place in my already dying body. That was a fever above 102~F (38~C). Sometimes it made me feel like a piece of wood on fire. But other moments, I felt totally cold like I was into a fridge. It was not all; to make it a combo an increasing pain punished me when I was trying to sleep.
Fortunately, my mother took me to the doctor after six days sick. He gave me some antibiotics, and suggested me eat healthy, rest, and take frequently showers. I started following his indications and my disease started going down little by little. It was a long process to recover my soft skin, and feel the difference between fire and cold again.
After all a process, I visited the doctor one more time, and he gave a clean bill of health. I was very happy to go out with my friends, and to enjoy my mom’s hugs. It was a tragic time for me, and I hope never live it again.
