My name is George Washington; I’m the President of the Unites States of America

My wife Martha and I live in a house that was lend to us by our friend Robert Morris. I spend most of my time at home, in my office, seeing visitors, writing letters and worrying. The French problem is in my mind all day long, I know that, thanks to the French help, we are free from the British, but I’m not sure that we are strong enough to help France to battle Great Britain, Holland, Spain and Austria.
The French monarch, Louis XVI, had been a major reason why I was able to surround and force General Charles Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown in 1781. Thanks to this victory and after three years we gain our freedom.
In 1789 France had its own revolution and turned to us for help. Edmond Charles Genet was the new French minister. In April of that year he came to America and his first action was to hire American privateers, privately owned and manned ships, to attack and plunder British ships. Then he traveled to Philadelphia to ask for support on his efforts. I meet him but I refuse to discuss the subject.
Many citizens felt that I was betraying the French people. The secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson had a serious argument with the Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. Pro-French demonstrations were held near my house and escalated in intensity. My vice-president, John Adams was extremely nervous about this “French Madness” as he called.

  2. Mosquitoes, Flies and A Giant Whale Ivory

Mosquitoes and flies dominate the entire room. My nights are never full of sleep by the buzzing and biting of mosquitoes, and in the day times, flies come and annoy my work. They are enjoying to fly around my ivories and bones of whales, they're also used to make buzzing near my ears and crawling on my face, nose and ears. I never have a chance to avoid them with my bloody gloved hands. Sometime, by forgetting wearing those, I smear myself with blood on my face.
After cutting the last on of the twenty-six teethe of a sperm whale, I've decided to finish my work for today and go outside.
Yes, that is, that is enough, why I shouldn't go to the one of the best tavern in the Main street, one of the crowded area of Philadelphia, one of the biggest cities of the North America, as for a Saturday of the August, a month of the bloody hot summer, 1793.
As usual, Main Street is crowded and noisy with the children, men, women, sailors, merchants, labors, horses, chickens, pigs and chattering of three widows, Mrs. Margret Weatherby, Mrs. Elizabeth Wayne and Mrs. Elther Wart.
Because of a strange smell I got when I am passing them, I mutter for that. The three widows scrambly explain me about the spoiled coffee cargo of the sloop Amelia dumped on Ball's Wharf. I got a headache by the smell of stench and the heat.
Although noise and smell exploded in the Main Street, it is calm and quiet inside of the tavern. Only a well-to-do man is sitting on the corner of the bar. His name is Thomas Waters, a well-known gentleman of the town.
    "How do you do, John."
    "How do you do, Sir."
Then he asked me that the thing he asked me for a few months ago. A nine inches sperm whale ivory, it is not easy to get for that size of ivory, generally a sperm whale has 18 to 26 cone teeth and about 2 lbs weight each. Average size is 6 inches. The nine inches ivory Mr. Waters wanted can be got, but rare. Otherwise, it is depended on the whalers. I am just an ivory and bone cutter, I do my job after the whale meat production. And after me, the scrimshaw makers will use my products. Our industry goes through simply. Thus, I am not one who can fulfill his desire directly.
In the middle of our conversation, Dr. Rush comes into the tavern, and when he sees Mr. Waters, he ask him without hesitation.
    "How do you think? Tom."
"What do I think?" Mr.Thomas Waters replied.
    "Sorry, I mean French Problem."
Mr.Thomas Waters sighs loudly and answers.
"Well, I think president cannot agree, Rush."
"Hm, me too, so, how do you think Mr. Thomas Jefferson."
"He is not also an easy man, Rush. I feel bad, I think, in the end, he may be resigned for that disagreement between president and him."
    "Oh, yes. It may be."

Frankly, as a whale bone cutter, I can't understand what they are really talking about. But in English, I understand that a conflict is occurred between the president Washington and his secretary of the States, Thomas Jefferson over French problem. French is our alliance helped to get the independence. Thus, Mr.Thomas Jefferson want to pay back the French eternal debt. If it's not, we the American will feel betrayed over French people. But the president Washington concerns seriously about our young nation situation. It is very complicated to understand for a whale bone cutter, their conversation makes me increasing headache. But in the end, one of them pays my bill. I happily head back to my flies and mosquitoes.

Clerk in The bank of North America
Saturday, August 3,1973.The sun came up. I woke up in the morning. I felt the humid air blew to the window. I had been living in Philadelphia for more than ten years. But I had never seen the hot and humidity like that summer. My body sweated all over all the time. I went to take a bath and hoped that I will feel better after the bath. And hope the hot and humidity will relent soon. However, the hot gotten hotter. In Philadelphia an increasing number of cats and dogs were dropping dead every day.
I walk to work every day, because I lived only six blocks a ways from the bank. On the way I walked to the bank. I could see deal fish lying everywhere all along the river, gooey vegetable were expose and rotten on the street. Philadelphia covered with pollution, and strange stench smell all over the city.
I always like the summertime. However, that summer was extremely hot. I had a strong feeling that something was not right, and worried something bad might happen to the city. I was hoping people in Philadelphia could realize that and do something before any bad thing happen.

Journal entry for Saturday, August 3, 1793.
My name is John Weather stone and my occupation is Butcher, this is a really hard occupation. Today was a really hard day to me. Philadelphia’s population is too big and I have to work longer hours to supply the city, there were pigs, chickens, sheeps and cows waiting to behead and prepare the meat to people can eat.
The city especially where I work smell really bad, with a lot of animals around it looking for waste meat or their gust. I am tired of this because is disgusting and I think I could get an infection in my body, but at the same time I need my job to support my family.
Today was crazy and busy business day. A lot of people came out on high street to see the wares and they looked eagers to buy, at the same time a big problem is happening in the white house with the French problem.
The president of the United State is pressed to answer to the help call of France. France helped to United State many years ago, so now they are in a revolutionary war.
Personally in my opinion this is a very complicated point because USA has an eternal debt with France because Louis XVI had sent money, ships and soldiers to help USA against British and USA got his freedom.
Now France I calling Washington to support the revolutionary war against Great British, Holland, Spain and Australia, but Washington doesn’t know what to do because he thinks that USA doesn’t have the enough military to fight against those big foes.
France helped United State many years ago so I think Washington must help this old ally not matter is the military is not enough, the thing is that if France helped to USA to get his freedom now is the moment to respond as a good ally.

On saturday, august 3 , I went early morning to the forest, and I chopped lots of trees ' logs.It was hard day as much as other dayes in august.
the weather was too hot and sweltery.I fininshed my work early , so I went to a tavern to have
Some beer.It was a noisy evening where lots of folks were arguing together concening of a French problem .Some of them were in president 's side ,and others including me had a opposit opinion ; we insisted that the United States should pay back to frence which supported
The Americans in their war against British , but the president hesisated to help his old ally . I guess our president was just worry about pushing his country into trouble .
Anyway,it was not my important problem since I have lots of thing to deal with .I had my beer
With my friend and went back home to have some rest after that long sweaty day.

  10. My name is Margaret Watson. I'm 24 and I'm miller. I really like what I do for a living. I love to create and sew different styles of hats and accessories and give fashion advice to my adorable wealthy clients, most of them are women, of course. I need to keep my finger on the pulse and be at the center of information about all fashion meetings and important event in our city. Later, I will have a subject to gossip about.
This Saturday I left my client - Mrs, Smith - a little earlier than usual and decided to spend the rest of the day in the closest tavern. May be I will be lucky and meet a nice guy today. Even if not I have to know the mood of people around. I need the subject to gossip tomorrow about.
The main issue was the "French problem" that was on people's mind the most these days, Not so many years before, the French monarch - Louis XVI had helped us with money, ships and soldiers to fight against British. Then, a revolution happened in France and the monarch was beheaded. Now the government of the New French Republic started a war with Great Britten and the new smart, handsome minister, Edmond Genet, asked our president, G. Washington, to help them in the war against British.
I don't understand why our president is so hesitatant. It looks like he wants to avoid trouble. I agree with people who say that we have to be grateful and participate and support the New French Republic.

This summer is sweltering hot. Even though, I'm not moving, I still sweating. I have few hours to stay home.In every saturday, I start my wine shop business in afternoon. I hope a quiet pleasure morning. Despite that, I still can hear noise from crouded people. In addition, noxious odors is smelled from the sewers that rotted with dead animals. I have been living this city since I was a child. I have my families , my home and my business here. The environment of the city is going worse. The situation of this country may get involved in war. For common people, I Love peace. I don't want my country get in any war. Some people may thought that we are betraying to the French . In contrast,French is not fight for freedom. Unlike French, we struggled against British because we want our country independent.

    August 3, 1793.

As usual on my days off, I went to the market to buy some food in the morning. The intense heat and the crowded streets made of today a typical summer day. As normal, there was an unpleasant odor on the streets because of the open sewers, rotten vegetables, and dried blood from the market.
In the afternoon, I went to a tavern. It is already normal to see an amazing number of flies and other insects in the taverns and beer gardens. There is also an abundance of mosquitoes. They are everywhere. Currently, most of the conversations in taverns are about business and politics, and today was no exception. The “French problem” issue is the one most discussed these days. President Washington refuses to help France in its war with Great Britain, Holland, Spain, and Austria. Many people are very angry at the president because France has been our biggest ally. In my opinion the president’s negative is completely inadequate. The French aid was the biggest reason why Washington was able to surround and force General Charles Cornwallis to surrender years ago. Because of that, eventually we won the war. I believe our country ought to help the French and, if it were necessary, fight against their foes. Our nation’s greatness is being obscured by the stance of the president!

  14. My name is John Watkins. My occupation is boot and shoemaker and I'm fifty-one.
Today, August 3, 1793, I worked so hard making boots and shoes the whole day. Today, I went to a tavern. I gambled and I had some drinks there. Many strange things have happened during those passed days. For example, France has just asked our President, George Washington for help and some people have died inexplicable.
France needs help because it has just involved in war with Great Britain, Holland, Spain, and Austria. George Washington knows that the US has owed France because they helped us when we had problems with the British. Even though the US owes France, the US will be neutral (that’s what I think).
I've just noticed that people have died and the bells from the church have sung more often because of that. No longer, a young French sailor had acted fanny with violent seizures and a few days later he died. Something rare is going on or it can be a plague from the pigeons. I hope it will become normal.

Today is Saturday, August 3, 1793 and I have day off. It is very hot today and I don't feel good. I have meeting today with my friends. Some of hem are business people, some are politics.

We will discuss today the "French problem". It means that French asked United States for help to attack British,Holland,Spain and Austria.

In my opinion United States should help French, because not so many years ago the French aid had been the major reason why Washington was able to surround and force General Charles Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown in 1781.This victory led to a British capitulation three years later and to freedom for the United States.

    August 3, 1793

I waked up at midnight, because I was thirsty. After I had a glass of water, I went to bed again. I tried to sleep, but I couldn’t. I usually fall asleep very easily, but I couldn’t at all. I did not know why.

I heard the sounds from the bar crossing to the street afternoon, and then I finally waked up. I didn’t feel I want to go out today. I felt sick. I didn’t feel to have appetite.

My apartment is close to the church. They made sounds of bell many times, I felt awkward. I started to work for my job. The chair, which I was making now is for my mother, was almost finished. I tried to continue, but I quit doing.

Honestly, I really don't like to close to the shore. Especially the Philadelphia one. I am enjoy sailing on the ocean. I think it is the most beautiful, charming and passionate place in the world. Its air just so fresh, and sometime it might smell b bit soltly but still smells good. I like to stey outside on the deck and feel sea breeze caressing my skin. Also it waves sometimes, so the shi waves as my mother waves my cradle in the old old times ago. I think the ocean is so gentle and familiar. I feel it lkie mother; also when it gets angry is just lkde a mother as well.

Today, my ship were berthed in the Philadelphia port. We needed to by some supplement, and most of my sailers needed a day off. They love to go to tavern and drink some alcohol. Most of time, there were full of sailer which from other ships, and they were chating, singing, and exchanging their different sailing experence, informathion, and gossip. These was not my entertainment now; but I knew then well, because I was a sailer in a long time ago.

I decided to walk around the town a bit to see maybe I can buy something for my family. It was not a nice tour. The sun was so bright, hot, and unrelenting. My uniform was sticking on my skin while the tour. Imade me felt so unconfortble. Aswarm of flies and in sects were having a party time in there. Everywhere smelled like dead fish and gooey vegetable. Expacially when I closed to the open sewers, the smell became deadly strong. I had almost fainted. Immediately, I decided to leave and go back to my ship.

In the meanwhile, I had heard citizens were tolk about "French Problem". I think we should give a hand to French, because they were helped us before. We have to return that favor, also because people on the world will watching us, and who know we do or do not need helps in the feature. If we were considered as a betrayer, they will watch us surffering when we need help. However, in the other hand, I am worried about our union either, because we are sush a new nation; we don't have such strong and powerful militory to take so many formidabe foes.
