Heidi’s Class
It’s the Way How we Use it

“Darling, go to do your homework~!”  My mom called.  “Just a minute.”  While I answered my mother I was still watching the television drama.  “Go back to do your homework.  Now!” Few minutes after, my mother came and made me turned off my computer.  Then I walked back to my study slow and reluctantly.  I don’t remember how many times this kind of situation has happened when I was a high school student.  I used to spend a lot of time in internet.  Watching dramas or movies, chatting with friends, some of them I didn’t even know; browsing some websites or forums, but neither of them has anything to do with my study.  I missed a lot of schoolwork and didn’t do my homework well.  Usually I didn’t pay attention in classes.  I was cared about nothing but using computer.  Naturally, I didn’t get a high score.  Instead of it, my academic performance was totally awful.
As what I have done, many of students did or doing the same thing.  A survey report showed, 93% of students had used internet, 65.3% of students use it often, 15.3% of students really want to but restricted by conditions, and only 13.8% of students think it is indifferent.  There are 60% of those students have spend on internet between 8 to 20 hours every week and 12% of students have spent more than 35 hours.  Most of those students spend their time doing some amusements.  The most things they are usually doing are sending and getting emails, chit chat and browse some websites or forums.  Sending and getting emails accounts 76%, chit chat or making friends 65%, search information or reading news 62.5%, download music or software 48.5%, reading books 40.5% , watching movies 36.5%, browse some websites or forum 33%, play online or computer games 29% , others 27% , searching jobs 11.5%, shopping 8% and for training or educations are only 2.5%.  According to report, most of students didn’t use internet to do too much things about study.  On the country, using internet might have affected them.
I have read some news about the effect of internet to educations.  Mr. Lee, A sophomore college student had second place in his class before he addicted online games.  Since Lee had played, he spent time on internet from dusk to dawn.  Sometimes he could stayed weeks or month with his computer and never goes out.  His family and teachers in school had tried to persuade him, but he badly changed.  As a result of that, he missed lots of his courses and failed most of his classes.  Then he eventually has expelled from school.  The other effect of education is plagiarism.  In Germany, the phenomenon of students’ plagiarisms is getting serious.  A scholar of University of Leipzig had a survey.  The report showed that 90 percent of students would accept that plagiarize articles from internet in principle.  25 percent of respondents had admitted they have done that during their colleges.  That happened in high schools in Germany too.  There are 50 percents of college freshmen had done plagiarism more or less.  There are event some professional websites have services for students to do their homework.
In this rapidly developing era, digital and informational technology occupied a very important position.  Meanwhile it has changed our lives a lot.  People almost can get everything they need on internet, such as books, movies, music, food, clothes, daily necessities, and even many different types of services.  More and more people depend on their smart phones, computers and electronic products.  They got addicted with internet and cannot live without it.  Various and varieties of information have filled in internet.  Those became distractions.  There are so many sorts of novelty online games, a wide variety of websites, news or information, popular music and exciting movies.  All of them like a huge black hole draw you in to spend time and times to read or watch.  Then time flew by before you realized it.
In ancient, people used to search for material themselves, read a lot of books or asked other people questions to get those information they needed.  Now it is very convenient to search the information online.  The only thing you need to do is type what you need and google it.  But, if something is getting too easy to get, would you still value or appreciate that?  First, we will felt it is so easy to get things down.  You need to find some information---just google it.  We don’t even want to check books or dictionaries.  Second, we usually don’t really remember that information we found later, because it was easy, our brain won't have deep impression of them.  Last, we don’t think.  It is the most terrible part.  People sometimes event don’t know how to think or don’t want to.  They only want answers.  In this environment, people getting lazier, they totally rely on technology and have a very strong dependence.
Then does that mean the technology has only disadvantage?  Despite that distraction and affect technology possibly could be made, the problem isn’t technology itself.  As people know, technology could really make life easier.  It could help people get information and learn knowledge which used to be hard to get.  The point is the way how we use it.  If we use it wisely, it can really benefit us; if not, it also can cause bad effects.

  1. Hi Viola,

I love your introduction! It is so wonderful to start with a short anecdote that your reader can really visualize. It is also interesting to read an essay that discusses the "dark side" of technology because we are so often focussed only on the benefits of computers, the Internet, etc. Please be careful with the studies that you cite in this essay, though. You need to state exactly where you got the information from, otherwise you can't use it. There are a lot of statistics in here, and what I really wanted as a reader was to hear more about your personal addiction to the Internet and how you dealt with it. I wanted less of the general information that you presented and more details about how you tried to solve your problem with it. Do you think you can shift the focus back onto your own experiences? I think that this would make the essay stronger and more original.
