Once again I am writing those that may be my last letters. Death has been looking at Philadelphia , decided to turn off the lights of all the lives in the city. However, when the possibility of any hope had dissipated by the mounting number of deaths, there still may be a solution on the suddenly cure given by Dr.Rush. It is very drastic and dangerous because it consists on drinking poison and bleeding, but it seems to be the only cure for now. Despite the polemic that has been generated by this new treatment along the medical world, the cure may be working out because there are some people who say that treatment has made them get better. Nevertheless, as deaths multiply, it is too soon to think that a miracle has arrived. There is also another doctor, named Jean Deveze, who has actually seen yellow fever in other occasions and has contracted it twice as well. Dr.Deveze’s treatment is more gentle than Dr.Rush’s. It consists in drinking wine to stimulate the blood and bleeding in very small amounts. As happen with Dr.Rush’s cure, it is too early to believe Dr.Deveze’s cure can bring any salvation. The Prince of bleeders, as many people have begun to call Dr.Rush, still has the best option of treatment. Whether Dr.Rush’s cure is risky or not conventional, it seems allay in some way the symptoms.

As you know my family and I had leaved Philadelphia before it was banned by neighborhoods legislation. God was kind to save my husband, me and two our daughter. Almost three weeks we live in my brother’s house in Maryland. Now a lot of people try to collect saved money, livestock, carts with vegetable, and barrels of water. People bring all these things to Central square in the Maryland. All these stuff, than going to Philadelphia. People, in Virginia and Maryland, know about grief and gloom that occurring in our hometown.
New rumors were reached us that people with yellow fever maybe will have another chance to survive, because of new French doctor Deveze, who cure a different strategy of treatment, and his method of approaching more helpful.
Well known doctor, Benjamin Rush attacked Dr. Deveze and his coworkers, but they try to ignore his attacks. Dr. Rush is still popular, and respected among his patients. It is all rumors, whish reach us for today.

The city was extremely sad because of that terrible epidemic which called yellow fever .As you know, I fled out of the city to my parent’s farm, so I was lucky that I did not get this fever, but I heard scary information about its treatment.
I heard that a famous doctor who was Dr.Rush found a cure, and lots of patients got better after it; it was bloodletting and giving a toxic substance to cause –vomiting and diarrhea. I felt very sorry for those patients who took that anguishing cure since it was too scary, but after that I heard that a French doctor named Dr.Jean Deveze came up with an acceptable and gentle cure which was giving the patients herbal tea and feeding them properly to make their bodies work correctly. To be honest with you, that cure gave me a sense of comfort because it was not harmful for patients and lots of them survived after a period of time.
In the end, I guess that the situation at Bush hill getting better and better. I hope all the patients will be healthy soon.

The epidemic of yellow fever was an incontestable disease that Philadelphia was wildly infected in summer of 1793. That terrible epidemic caused a lot of deaths. However, many doctors were present and clearly saw how people died with this outbreak. That was
At that time, the doctors tried to do their best to avoid too many deaths, but they couldn’t because this epidemic was extremely wild. Among doctors who were there, there was the famous Dr Rush. That one was really interested by treatment infected people. The famous Rush’s cure for yellow fever was “bleeding blood and purge”. Also, he used a recipe called “Ten-and-Ten” This recipe was used in Revolutionary War for patients to swallow ten grains of calomel and ten grains of Jalap. Both were toxic and produce vomiting and diarrhea.
I never tried Dr Rush’s cure because I thought that was too old and could make me vomiting and diarrhea. That was not always recommended to drink or eat something to vomit. In consequence, it’s going to make people dehydrated and people will look slimmer, I mean people are going to be thin. Differently from the other doctors, such as Dr Deveze didn’t believe Rush’s cure. He was someone who had not only seen and treated yellow fever. He had also contracted it. His treatment was cautious and gentle (small amount of sweetened wine would be given to a patient to stimulate the blood; quinine would be administered… ref. An American Plague).

Otherwise, there was also Bull Hill. It was a hospital in which several doctors having each their specific task. They appointed to attend the patients rarely showed up. Some of them made a number of visits, but spent more time performing autopsies on dead bodies than ministering to the sick people.
In reality, if I had yellow fever at that time, I would prefer Dr Deveze to treat me because when he went to Bush Hill, The hospital conditions were improved, so he won out. Even though some patients were bled, but in a very small amount. It’s my evidence to show how Dr Deveze would be the best choice to treat me.

I heard about Dr. Rush’s cure. It seems that nature alone it’s not enough to cure this epidemic so he has been treating his patients a little more ruthlessly. He has been using “Ten-and-Ten”. The patient swallows ten grains of calomen and ten grains of jalap. They both are toxic, Dr. Rush is poison the people to induce them to vomit and with this expel this fever from the body. He is also let the patients bled, in some cases enough to the person lose conscience, He really believe in this cure. I’m not so sure about this so call cure, I feel a little nervous about it, I think he is killing more people than the fever itself.
I also heard that Dr. Deveze, a French friend of Stephen Girard, it’s helping at Bush Hill. His approaching to the fever is totally different from Dr. Rush’s. Dr. Deveze had traded yellow fever in the past and he had contracted it twice. He believes that the body needs to do his own healing. He treats the patients with small amount of sweetened wine, quinine, veal or chicken broth, cream rice and tapioca. I’m not sick but if I was sick I would prefer go with Dr. Deveze because his treatment look more gentle and human in all aspects.

Finally, It looks we reach the end of the tunnel and see light. This disease has been really awful. Many people have died and still dying, but I feel a little better because I have heard that our most famous doctor Benjamin Rush has found a "cure" for this deadly disease.

Dr. Rush is been in the city working hard to stop the increasing number of people dying. After a long time, his persistence paid off. His "cure" is made in base to another one probably applied during the Revolutionary War in Virginia by John Mitchell, which helped the patients to keep their stomach and intestines emptied of blood. It was called "the ten and ten", this contained 10 grains (no quite one-third of an ounce)of calomel and ten grains of jalapa (the poisonous root of a Mexican plant).

People is saying that Dr. Rush "cure" has saved many lives, but it also has killed too many. That's the reason why I haven't taken his cure yet. I think that what is he he doing is good because he wants to save lives, but at the same time is bad because people still dying and could be for the method that he use. For me he should try to find a safer cure.

I here at my house eating what I can and trying to stay alive. sometimes a black nurse comes to visit me, she helps me with some medicine and food. Lat time she told me that now Bush Hill is treating people with yellow fever. She said that things are improving and a new doctor called Jean Deveze has come to that place. he is good as she described him, and his methods seem to be better than Dr. Rush's. With this information I think that Dr. Deveze could help the city to content the disease, and to treat those who have it, in a better way. he appears to be our best hope.

Bush Hill is almost a complete hospital. It has improved its structure and the quality of its services is really good. This place is the best place now to day or to stay alive. The staff know how to treat their patients. In case that I get sick with yellow fever, I would like to go to Bush Hill, so Dr. Deveze and his colleagues -which I think has the beast treatment- could save my life.

Yes i have heard of Doctor Rush, he is a prestigious men in the city. After Doctor rush treated many sick people he became one of the victims of the yellow fever too, now people feel so bad for that because he was the only doctor who had announced a cure against the yellow fever and if doctor Rush die the people would know that his cure for the yellow fever failed and their hope would vanish completely.

Even if the Doctor Rush treated his patiens with great caution he got contagious. Although the Doctor Rush was sick of yellow fever he continued his work, he started using new different mettods to help their patients to get the cure, one of this mettods was wrapping the whole body of their patients in blankets dipped in warm vinegar, but nothing worked and more and more Rush patiens were diying.

Dr Rush started to feel so bad and powerless, each death shok him personally. However, he never gave up.

If i were there at that time and i were sick, i would choose Dr Rush to treat my sickness, because he was a prestigious Doctor at that time and because he was the only one who was interested in cure all of the people who had the yellow fever.

People are concerned because the disease has enormously grown and spread in the city. This terrible disease is like the cancer, once you have it, it kills you slowly. Over the past two weeks there has been a controversy about Dr. Rush's cure for yellow fever.

Dr. Rush's treatment is cruel. The sicks who are treated by him actually suffer more and died. His patients are given toxic substances to cause them to ha diarrhea and they are cut in a vain to make them bleeding. Inspite the terrible treatment, some people still take it because there was the only cure in the city.

Now there's another cure that people are talking about. A new doctor called Jean Deveze has come to this city and volunteer at Bush Hill Hospital. Deveze is French and some people including me believe that he has come to rescue us from this monster. He has to work very hard because Bush Hill has a bad reputation. In my opinion, before he came, to be there (in Bush Hill) was like to commit suicide because the doctors who worked there rarely showed up to see how were the patients going.

I haven't been infected, but if I get it, I would want to take Dr. Deveze's treatment because his treatment is more cautious and gently and I would probably choose this because he comes from other country that might be he had treated this kind of situation.

A suspect on the Hero. .

Like other previous Saturdays, this Saturday was half-ended with full of patients. For me, the whole morning was finished by looking for the veins of patients and bloodletting. Even though those were assisting to Dr. Rush and also his original method, he was not my real teacher in person; my hand in hand teacher was Peter, 11 years old boy. He was taught by Dr. Rush, and then we were taught by him.
We had to draw out the blood, a full of helmet from each patient, according to Dr. Rush's opinion, they owned 25 pounds each of blood in their bodies, by bloodletting, we could re-balance their bodies from the bad condition to the good condition. But, obviously almost all the patients were passed out after bloodletting, they were faint, and breathed difficultly. However, Dr. Rush never hesitated to continue his next step of treatment. He urged to take some traditional herbal and mercury to the patients, in reality those were poisons, Dr. Rush did the patients to vomit intentionally.
Many of them were passed out and some never remained their lives, those events couldn't change Dr. Rush's strong belief in his own treatment, he was cured himself by that way a few days ago and regained, it made him stronger in belief.
On the other hand, in contrast, in Bush Hill, A French Doctor, Dr. Jean Deveze treated the patients very gently. By overhearing, he used the soft sweetened wine and quinine, then to recover provided the patients by feeding meat, chicken and creamed rice. By his method, many of them were recovered and Bush Hill got goodwill.
In reality, before Dr. Deveze, the previous doctors failed the trust of the people, they never concerned about the sick people despite examining the dead bodies. The hospital was a disaster until Helm and Girard handled. Helm managed the outside of the Bush Hill; he accepted the new patients and cleared the unburied dead. Girard was also special; he treated passionately the patients and managed systematically the halls. Like as a gift of the Heaven, when Dr. Deveze arrived, all the conditions turned around.
“John, give me a hand please”
Annie, a volunteer and also a member of the free African Society, asked me, I was running to her. In her hands, an about 8 years old white girl was struggling against her. Even though she was suffering sick, the disease couldn't hide her beauty, the soft blond pliant tresses and the breathtaking green eyes were making cuter to her innocence.
“Take an easy honey, it doesn't hurt too much, I promise.”
She looked at my eyes; her green eyes were full of tear of fear.
“But she tries to take my blood a full of helmet, I will die for that.”
“No, honey, believe me, everyone was treated like that. Don't worry.”
“I scare, I don't think that I have not enough blood as much as that amount.”
“You have, believe me you have.”
At last, she couldn't avoid any longer, agreed to draw bloodletting from her. She grasped my hands while drawing bloodletting, her blood flew to the helmet by the tube, but not reached to the top, just a few lines over the half, the blood stopped and her hand grasped my hands were loose, and dropped. Annie opened her eyes, tested her breath.
“Oh, No, she was gone, John.”
I couldn't stop to break down in tears. I swore that I never had a stupor over my own belief as Dr. Rush was a hero, but began to suspect his treatment.

  14. is already September 14, and i have the fever, my two little boys die and my wife was taken to Bush Hill. I am alone in my poor house. I hear a lot of news every day and i don't know what is going to be the end or when this situation is going to end.

People have been taken to Bush Hill but i heard that there was a very bad condition in that place. The local newspaper says that Mayor Clarkson formed an illegal committee to work in the city, it says that a small group of citizens joined to Clarkson. They are helping to clean up houses, streets, and also they borrow $1,500 for the purchase of medicine, coffins, and a variety of other necessary item to give to the people. they are doing a good job because we really need someone who take care of us.

There is another good news, two volunteers Helm and Girard went to Bush Hill to manage the situation in there. They are definitely doing a good job, there was a mess, everything was disorganized but they took the control and now everything is changing for better. Also I heard about Dr. Deveze, he went to Bush Hill and his treatment is working well in the patients at least to keep them alive for a little bit longer.
Dr. Deveze is against Dr. Rush cure. He doesn't believe in it, Helm and Girard and now Dr. Deveze changed the Bush Hill face. now people start going there confident. I want to go as well, I wonder if my wife still alive.

The weather today is dark like my life and I feel weak more than every day. The disease reduced my strength but I will never give up. I try to encourage myself every night. This morning, Philadelphian is talking about Dr.Rush who finds a way to cure. His treatment was very risky and dangerous because he will use some poisonous and bloodletting. I do not want to see him because I am afraid of his treatment. However, if it is the only way that can cure, I will do it.
Beside Dr.Rush, there is another doctor, Dr.Jean Deveze, who does not believe in Dr.Rush treatment. He has his own methodology that is very caution and gentle. He will give patients some sweetened wine to stimulate the blood circulation system.
Some doctors in Bush Hill are disagrees with Dr.Rush’s treatment as same as Dr.Jean Deveze. In my opinion, I think I should go to see Dr. Jean Deveze before Dr.Rush. At this moment I am not fear in anything I will dedicate myself to any doctor that might be find the way to help all illness people.

  16. Dear Diary:
I feel grieved! Samma was dead. Before yesterday, I went out buy some food. On the way home, I overheard some gravediggers were talking about a lady they have buried. From the appearance they described I know that was her, and they also mentioned that letter I let her delivered. Oh, God! If I didn’t let her send the message, she probably wouldn’t infect the yellow fever. That was my fault, I am so sad.

Now I have no else to go. In fact, even if I do, I don’t think I still can. Those places which around this city have banned people leaving the city. Nobody can actually escape from Philadelphia. I heard they have patrols scouted country lines and lanes byways to prevent diseases and infectious people. No matter sick or not, we are all imprisoned here, like prisoners. In one hand, ships from Philadelphia wouldn’t be allowed to land in Delaware. In this case, getting fresh water would be more and more difficult. In the other hand, some citizens from outside have send some food and clothes to help us. It’s really thoughtful.

In spite of all, I still think we have some kind of situations could call “good news”. In front of this huge plague, we still have some people responsible; some people like Mr. Israel, Mr. Helm, Mr. Carey, Girard, Mr. Dr. Rush, Dr. Deveze and those people who have done a lot of things to help this town.

I hope everything would be better soon. May God protect everybody!

Oh God! What happened to Philadelphia? Did we pay the consequence of something? Every day, I wondered, my eyes were tired with tears, and hoping for assistance. A drop is enough to break, but I sill believed Dr. Rush can provide a treatment for the disease and relented this horrible Yellow Fever.

While I heard about the cure from Dr.Rush,I felt a fresh water flowing all over my body, but it was for a moment .I thought I had been contamited. It was so terrible ,I cried every day for my kids because I didn’t want them to be orphan. I began to feel feverish and weak. I complained about the procedure of the cure because it was too hard for me. I was so worried again, the blood made me feel depressing, I couldn’t do Doctor Rush treatement.I heard from someone Bush Hill had improved a lot, the condition was little bit acceptable, I wanted to be there, but I couldn’t. I had been visited by some nurses from the Free Black Organization and after from committee created by Mayor Clarkson, they took care of my children and I, they brought something for us it was very helpful. After a dark moment, Dr. Jean Deveze brought the hope for me. His treatment was simple and applicable. I decided to go to Bush Hill, I followed the treatment from doctor Jean Deveze,I felt better. In my mind, I thought I could be healthy again. I would never stop to hope. That was the only way, I had. The sunrise brought me joy inside because I was still alive.
